Blueberry syrup is a refreshing homemade drink that combines the natural sweetness of blueberries with a pleasant tanginess. It is an excellent alternative to industrial syrups and suitable for both children and adults. With its intense purple hue and rich flavor, it brings health and vibrancy to your table. Tip for removing possible stains: dab the stain with yogurt or sour milk, then rinse the clothing in lukewarm water.

Ingredients for blueberry syrup (about 5–6 liters)

  • 3 l blueberries (washed and cleaned)
  • 2 l boiled and cooled water
  • 40 g citric acid
  • sugar – amount according to the obtained juice (approximately 1 kg sugar per 1 l juice)

Method

1Wash the blueberries and blend them in a food processor. Transfer them to a large bowl and add 2 liters of cooled boiled water and 40 g of citric acid. Cover and leave to rest for 48 hours.

2Strain the mixture through a sieve, then twice more through an increasingly fine cloth (e.g. folded cheesecloth) to obtain clear juice.

3Squeeze the remaining blueberries well, discard the leftovers. Measure how many liters of juice you obtained.

4Add one kilogram of sugar per liter of juice. Stir well until the sugar is completely dissolved.

5Sterilize the bottles in the oven at 100 °C for about 10–15 minutes so they’re ready for filling.

6Pour the syrup into the sterilized bottles, seal well and store in a cool, dark place.

7Before serving, dilute the syrup with water to taste or use it as a topping for desserts and ice cream.

Tips for the perfect blueberry syrup

• Use the ripest and freshest blueberries for a more intense flavor.
• If you want a less sweet syrup, reduce the amount of sugar to 800 g per liter of juice.
• Add a piece of vanilla pod or lemon peel for extra aroma.
• Freeze the syrup in small portions for longer shelf life.
• For better color, use dark glass bottles as they protect from light.
