Homemade lemon syrup

Homemade lemon syrup has an excellent taste that’s easily prepared from fragrant lemons.

This simple recipe brings the freshness and citrus flavor to your home that’s hard to find in store-bought syrups. With just a few basic ingredients, you’ll create an aromatic syrup that pairs perfectly with water, tea, or cocktails.

For preparation, use unsprayed lemons, as citrus peels often contain various pesticides that harm our health.

Ingredients for homemade lemon syrup

  • 2 kg lemons or limes
  • 4 liters of water
  • 3.5 kg sugar
  • 5 packets of citric acid

Method

1Boil 4 liters of water and cool it down really well. Slice all the lemons with their peel and put them in the cooled water.

2Of course, wash the lemons thoroughly first. You can soak the lemons in a baking soda and water solution and let them sit for 20 minutes, or wash them in hot salt water.

3Some people then peel the lemons, save the peels, and pour the juice from the squeezed lemons over them, letting the peel release its substances that greatly contribute to the flavor. We didn’t peel our lemons.

4Leave the lemon slices in the boiled cooled water for 24 hours. Then work them with your hands and squeeze them really well so that every single juice chamber bursts.

5Strain the squeezed contents. Repeat the process if needed, as you decide whether the remaining lemon pulp in the juice will bother you or not. Some people also use gauze or cloth diapers. For our needs, a coarse strainer did the job well enough.

6Now add sugar and citric acid to the lemon juice. Stir until the sugar and citric acid dissolve. You’ll feel under the spoon how the thick mixture quickly dissolves. A syrup will form.

7Pour the syrup into clean bottles. It’s also more than suitable for holiday gifts.

Add lemon syrup to water, tea, cocktails, or other drinks to taste. You can also use it as a sweetener for various desserts. This homemade lemon syrup will add a refreshing flavor to your drinks and desserts.
