Sage in brandy with honey is a traditional homemade liqueur that combines the healing properties of sage, the warmth of honey and the strength of brandy. The result is a drink that not only warms you on cold days, but also supports the immune system, soothes the throat and helps with digestive issues. Thanks to its natural antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds, sage is highly valued in folk medicine. Enriched with honey, it becomes a pleasantly sweet herbal drink. This liqueur can be served as an aperitif or digestif – always in moderation.

Ingredients for sage in brandy with honey (about 1 liter)

  • 0.5 l of homemade brandy or vodka
  • 100 dried sage leaves
  • 250 g of honey
  • 0.5 l of water
  • juice of 3 unwaxed lemons

Method

1Boil the water and pour it over the dried sage leaves. Leave for 10 minutes, then strain and squeeze the leaves well.

2Add honey to the hot tea and stir until it is completely dissolved. Allow to cool.

3Squeeze the lemons and strain the juice if desired to remove pulp.

4Pour the cooled sage tea, lemon juice and brandy into a clean bottle. Mix well, seal and leave to rest for at least one month. Shake the bottle occasionally.

5After maturing, serve the liqueur as an aperitif or digestif. Drink only in small quantities – it is not recommended for pregnant women.

Tips for the perfect sage liqueur

• Use dried sage leaves – they release much less thujone, which in large amounts can be harmful.
• Store the liqueur in a cool, dark place to preserve its aroma.
• Instead of vodka, you can use homemade brandy for a stronger flavor.
• For a richer aroma, add a sprig of rosemary or a few cloves.
• Drink in moderation – this is a strong herbal preparation, not an everyday beverage.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What health benefits does sage have?

Sage has traditionally been used for sore throats, mouth inflammations, digestive problems and menstrual cramps. It contains antioxidants that support the immune system.

Why use dried leaves instead of fresh ones?

Fresh leaves contain more thujone – a neurotoxin soluble in alcohol. Drying significantly reduces its content, making the liqueur from dried leaves safer.

How long can I store sage liqueur?

In a tightly sealed bottle and kept in a cool place, sage liqueur can last for several months, often up to a year. Its flavor becomes smoother over time.
